Exhibitions

Sorry lot's of writing today, no pretty pictures,
Unfortunately I was unable to attend the exhibitions that I mentioned before as I had no money whatsoever so have just looked at some new ones that I really want to go to in the next two weeks after I get paid :)
These ones look really interesting and I would like to see how they display their work through mounting and framing. I will update on here once I have been to them and write what I thought of them.

Photography: New documentary forms
1st May 2011- 31st March 2012 at the Tate Modern
Free entry
“This new five-room display explores the ways in which five contemporary artists have used the camera to explore, extend and question the power of photography as a documentary medium. Consisting entirely of new acquisitions to Tate’s collection, it includes recent work by Luc Delahaye, Mitch Epstein, Guy Tillim and Akram Zaatari, as well as two important earlier works by Boris Mikhailov. Between them they cover subjects as diverse as the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, studio photography in Beirut, elections in the Congo, everyday life in pre- and post-Soviet Ukraine, and power production in the United States. Each room concerns one discrete project, in which the artist calls into question the relationship between the documentary value of photography and the museum as its proper context.”

Level 2 Gallery: Burke + Norfolk: Photographs From the War in Afghanistan
6th May- 10th July 2011 at the Tate Modern
Free entry
In October 2010, Simon Norfolk began a series of new photographs in Afghanistan, which takes its cue from the work of nineteenth-century British photographer John Burke. Norfolk’s photographs reimagine or respond to Burke’s Afghan war scenes in the context of the contemporary conflict. Conceived as a collaborative project with Burke across time, this new body of work is presented alongside Burke’s original portfolios. The exhibition takes place in conjunction with an earlier complementary exhibition in March 2011 at the Queen’s Palace in the Baghe Babur garden in Kabul, supported by The World Collections Programme and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, which resulted from a series of workshops with Afghan photographers, featuring work by Fardin Waezi and Burke alongside Norfolk’s own work.”

ARTIST ROOMS: Diane Arbus
16th May 2011- 31st March 2012 at the Tate Modern
Free Entry
“Diane Arbus (1923–71) is acknowledged as one of the great figures of American photography who fixed remarkable images of contemporary life. Her sympathy for her subjects exposed the variety and complexity of the human condition. This three-room display is drawn from ARTIST ROOMS.”

Taryn Simon
25th May- 6th November 2011 at the Tate Modern
Free Entry
“Tate Modern premieres an important new body of work by the American artist Taryn Simon, who chronicles generational histories through an elaborate assembly of image and text. In each, the external forces of territory, power, circumstance or religion collide with the internal forces of psychological and physical inheritance. From feuding families in Brazil to victims of genocide in Bosnia, and human exhibitions in the United States to the living dead in India, Simon forms a collection that maps the relationships among chance, blood and other components of fate. Simon’s presentation explores the struggle to determine patterns embedded in the narratives she documents.”

Paul Graham: Photographs 1981-2006
20th April- 19th June 2011 at the Whitechapel Gallery
Free entry
“Photography 1981-2006 by the British artist, including the series 'A1', 'Troubled Land', 'New Europe' and 'American Night'. Many of Graham's images document journeys - across Europe, Japan and America - and present everyday scenarios.”

Ian Berry: This Is Whitechapel
11th March- 4th September 2011 at the Whitechapel Gallery
Free entry
“A display of images of East London from Whitechapel Gallery's archives, capturing a slice of social history from 1972.”

Exhibitions

There are a couple of exhibitions over the next month that I would really like to go and see and will keep this blog updated as to whether I get to either of them or not, but hopefully I will. These are:

Alex Laing - 'The Americas'. The photographs capture his year long journey across the Americas from the desert towns of Chile to the ghettos of New Orleans. This exhibition is on at The Architectural Association from 4/1/2011- 2/11/2011. Free entry. This sounds like an interesting exhibition to go to and I am interested when people document things over a period of time or space.
The Americas Photo

London Futures- A new exhibition shows London landmarks in an environment transformed by climate change. From rice fields in Parliament Square to ice-skating on the Thames, 14 familiar views of the capital have been digitally transformed by illustrators Robert Graves and Didier Madoc-Jones. I would really like to see this because climate change is a subject that is at the forefront of a lot of people's minds and seeing things like this can really show people what may become of our City. The exhibition is on at the Museum of London from 4/1/2011- 6/3/2011, free entry.

Focus On Imaging 2011

I really want to attend Focus on imaging this year at the Birmingham NEC. I haven't been before and really want to make the effort to go and have a look around at the different exhibitors. There are usually talks/workshops there which will be interesting to attend aswell.
It's on from 6-9th March 2011 so I will go for one of these scheduled days.

Published photos

Over the summer I was working in a tattoo studio, and I was asked to take some photos of people's tattoos and to take some photos of the owner at work, as she needed some to send off for a piece that was being written about her in a tattoo magazine. Unfortunately she didn't give my name as the photographer so my name isn't next to the photos.

Fizzy Bead Jewellery

I have recently taken some images for a local jewellery maker, she sells her items on ebay and a folk art website, she is also hoping to set up her own website next year. She wanted some professional looking images, that showed off some of the pieces she has made. I used the studio and used 2 lights, one underneath the light-table and one above, I also used coloured gels that matched with some of the colours on the bracelets, I think they work quite well. She was very pleased with the images and is going to use them to promote herself. I am pleased with how this turned out.

Corporate Identity logo

I have decided to change my logo for myself as I didn't really like what I had already. This is what I had before:

And after playing around with different fonts and colours I have settled on this final design, I think it looks more professional than before.
